On the foundations of the ancient Church of Sant’Antonio Abbate, construction of the church of Sant’Agostino and the neighboring convent began in 1613, by the will of Father Agostino Tavani. In the Tortoreto altarpiece the family crest is evident, consisting of three stars with a blue background and an orange band. Inside the church there is a precious canvas depicting the baptism of St. Augustine by the hand of St. Ambrose, attributed to Mattia Preti, a painter from Catanzaro born in 1613. Brought to L’Aquila in 1971 for restoration, in 2007 the canvas is back in the Church of Sant’Agostino, which is very popular especially in the summer.
